Our Shared History

The Federal Government has identified 67 Defence sites for divestment, including Victoria Barracks Sydney. Established in 1840, it is one of Australia’s most historically significant, operational military precincts. Its well-preserved history and heritage are a direct result of the care provided by its custodians, the Australian Army. Victoria Barracks still holds strategic importance as home of Headquarters Forces Command and Headquarters 2nd Health Brigade. Its versatility and location enables a broad range of uses, from the conduct of sensitive operations, through to hosting visits of foreign state and military leaders. All of this whilst still having deep connections with the local and greater Sydney communities. The site’s divestment would forgo a strategic location, weaken long-standing community relationships, diminish its significance and lose its shared history.

It is incorrect to suggest that its history and grounds are hidden away from the public. Victoria Barracks Sydney is open to the public weekly, offering free guided tours, as well as access to the Army Museum. Victoria Barracks Sydney welcomes the public and local communities for events, such as Anzac Day, Christmas Carols, Indigenous youth initiatives and charity events. It regularly hosts national, state and local sporting teams, who train and hold exhibition matches on its grounds.

It is feared that all of this will be lost if the site is sold - its history, its heritage, its identity - our history, our heritage and our identity.
